Michael “Sully” Sullivan remembered for his early participation, support of the OTRF Athletic Training Residency Program and numerous contributions to his ATC vocation

For the past 16 years, dozens of athletic trainers participated in the Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Teaching and Research Foundation (OTRF) postgraduate Athletic Training Residency Program to gain hands-on experience in clinical and operating room settings under the supervision of Dr. Steven Chudik, OTRF founder and president. Dr. Chudik wants to note the passing of a dear friend and former OTRF resident, Michael “Sully” Sullivan, MS, ATC, who passed away too soon, but not before helping thousands of patients and athletic trainers during his career. Dr. Chudik had the honor and pleasure of working with Sully during his OTRF athletic training internship and later as Sully served as president of the Illinois Athletic Trainers Association (IATA), president-elect for the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association (GLATA), and delegate to the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA). In 2017, Sully was named to the IATA Hall of Fame for his participation and work to improve the athletic training profession and the quality of health care in Illinois.

“Mike Sullivan was one of the driving forces behind the start of OTRF’s Athletic Training Residency Program and shared the early vision for athletic trainers and orthopaedic doctors working side by side in the clinic and operating room,” said Dr. Chudik. “He was devoted to his profession and to keeping people active and healthy. I was fortunate to have known Mike and to have had him involved with my Foundation’s program.”

Athletic trainers interested in learning more about the OTRF athletic training residency program can find curriculum information and an application on the OTRF website.
