Biking Rx for fun and fitness

My patients often ask what I recommend they purchase to improve their workout or exercise routines. A bicycle—stationary or free-wheeling—is always my response. As we age, we need to incorporate more non-weight bearing exercises that don’t take a toll on our joints. A bicycle is that perfect addition because it is easy on the knees and has added benefits that include:

  • Improved cardiovascular health,
  • Lower body and core strengthening,
  • Solo or social activity,
  • Affordable and an alternate to driving.

Although Amazon Prime Days may be over, there are still plenty of deals remaining with significant discounts. If you already have a bike, consider upgrading, getting an all-terrain/mountain bike, or buying accessories such as a helmet, biker shorts, gloves or shoes, water bottles, hydration pack, storage stand, baby trailers, bike trunk/rack, or maintenance/repair items like oil, tubes, light, lock, etc.

Just remember to stretch before you ride, wear a helmet and have fun! Doctor’s orders.
